What affects the cost of an EV charger installation

The starting point for almost every quote is a standard 7kW smart charger fitted close to the consumer unit, on a property with a straightforward earthing arrangement. From there, a few things push the price up or down.

Distance from your consumer unit to the parking space matters most. A charger fitted a metre or two from the fuse board is quick work. Run a cable 15 metres round the side of the house to a detached garage and you're paying for extra cable, containment, and labour.

Your earthing system matters too. Many Wembley properties, particularly newer builds, are on a PME (protective multiple earthing) supply, which under current wiring regulations usually needs an additional earth rod installed at the charger end for safety. That's an extra job on top of the charger itself.

Whether your consumer unit has spare capacity for a new circuit is another factor. Older boards in the semis around Sudbury Court and Barn Hill sometimes need a upgrade before a charger circuit can be added safely.

Grants and support available

It's worth being clear on this because we get asked constantly: the EV chargepoint grant that used to cover homeowners with a driveway was withdrawn in 2022. As of 2026, government support through the EV chargepoint grant is only available to renters and leaseholders in flats, covering up to 75% of installation costs capped at £350 per socket. Choosing an installer in Wembley

Your installer needs to be NICEIC or NAPIT approved, both to notify the work correctly under Part P building regulations and, if you do qualify for grant funding, to submit that claim on your behalf. Ask for a proper load calculation before work starts, particularly if you already have solar panels or a battery system, since the charger needs to be integrated into your overall electrical capacity rather than treated in isolation. Installations above certain outputs also require notification to your District Network Operator (DNO), which a properly registered electrician will handle as standard.
